Fieldsketching in the Amazon

The work he does when fieldsketching can later be used for a full scientific illustration because the methods used are practically the same. However, most of the work he does on the field and with group reverts back to the local and scientific community through exhibitions and free rights to use drawings. As such he has not strings attached but can still make the most of this important practice, as explained on the interview.

Pedro does not mind doing fieldsketching by himself but he also does it with fellow colleagues and professors. To organise longer fieldsketching trips, he put together the Risco goup (literally translated the streak group), composed mainly of scientific illustrators alike who enjoy the relaxing art of fieldsketching. They have been to several of Portugal's most famous biomes, as well the Amazon Rainforest, and North Africa, to name a few. It is not just work though, because he explained how they enjoy being a close-knit group who share different perspectives and techniques of the same thing.

Fieldsketching is the relaxed part of Pedro's work. It is only about drawing what you see without any worries for accuracy or where the drawing is going. It is Pedro's way of practicing his trade and at the same time relaxing his mind from the intense and scientific work he does in his studio. He explained how important it is for him go out into nature and do something different like this.

He has been to the Amazon Rainforest three times to do fieldsketching and is currently planning his fourth trip.
